Suck - Time to Suck, 1971

Part of South Africa's first wave of hard rock titled "The Big Heavies", Suck lasted eight months between 1970 and 1971 in which they recorded their lone L.P. "Time to Suck." It was later released in America in 2009. They were one of the earliest bands to cover Black Sabbath's ("War Pigs"). You can also hear them cover King Crimson's ("21st Century Schizoid Man"), and a version of "Season of the Witch."Awesome L.P. 'll give it 4 out of 5 whatever's...
The band was formed in Johannesburg in early 1970. South African born bassist Louis "Moose" Forer who'd previously worked with Peanut Butter Conspiracy in what used to be Rhodesia, and as bass player Billy Forest from a band called Group 66, hooked up with guitar player Steve 'Gil' Gilroy
who had just arrived from London where he played in a club with Mick Abrahams (formrly of Jethro Tull, and founder of Blodwyn Pig)."I think it was called the Underground", says Moose. ''Gil and I became drinking buddies immediately"
Italian born drummer Saverio "Savvy" Grand, who'd previously been in Elephant and had also worked with the Oompa Band , and who was inspired by Latin America percussion bands, met Gil and Moose in a club in Hillboro, Johannesburg.
Port Elizabeth born Cypriot, vocal and guitarist/flutist Andrew Ionnides, previously with Meenads, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and October Country and who recently moved up to Johannesburg, was drafted, and Suck was born.

In the early 1970's,music was changing, you had a mind boggling choice of bands that were becoming more visual, intense, and most of all HARD AND LOUD!!! There were bands like Blue Cheer, Arthur Bown, Black Sabbath and Steppenwolf, laying the ground for the first wave of hard rock to form. The U.S. and U.K were the leaders of the scene, followed by Germany and Japan. As dangerous as it was for bands lie this to come out of South Africa, like somewhere behind the Iron Curtain. There were bands though that caused a ruble, in countries where freedom didn't come easy in music or otherwise. And Suck was one of them.Eventually the band was barred by cities from entering, causing road blocks and the like. All of this detracted  from the fact that they were a good band with potential. They had achieved their goal of being the countries most controversial band, and that no doubt played a big role in their demise.

In the end, Suck only lasted 8 months, and all that's left is this album,
.....and it's damn good.
